“Middle Classes in Africa” is a project initiated in 2008 by Joan Bardeletti with the support of various partners and is due to be completed in mid 2010. It aims at understanding and describing the middle classes in Africa and particularly the role of this population in the political, economic and social development of the continent. This project associate an in-depth photographic essay, with research publications carried out by university partners in France and Africa.

6 african countries will be covered : Ivory Coast in Feb. 2009, Kenya in June 2009 and Mozambique in Sept. 2009. The last 3 countries will be defined this summer by the photographer and the researchers.

The project will be concluded in mid 2010 by a public exhibition in Paris associating photos and key findings of the research work; an international conference on the links between middle classes and the development of the african continent; the publication of a photo book. The exhibit will then tour in Africa for over a year in the capitals of the countries studied within the project
